Fishery Management

Consultancy

Consultancy contracts begin with initial site visits and further site investigations, followed up with written reports that include assessment of the current status of a water way or Stillwater as well as recommendations for the improvement or maintenance of the habitats found within the site. The extent of the data collected is specific to the site in question; Aquaterrain are equipped to carry out:

  • Flora and fauna identification, surveys, and long term management plans
  • Invertebrate identification and population monitoring
  • Fish stock assessments
  • Fish population dynamics assessment; population structure and ageing
  • Fish health and condition factor assessments
  • Safe fish stocking and removal plans either short or long term, considering all environmental factors for the recovery of fisheries requiring future stock management schemes
  • Water quality testing and monitoring
  • Disease identification and recommendations for eradication or long term treatment strategies for acute and chronic diseases
  • Scientific investigations and reports with detailed data interpretation, conclusions, and recommendations
  • Biosecurity assessment and recommendations for management

Fishery Management

Fishery management contracts include construction and maintenance, in order to restore and improve fisheries and the habitats found in U.K. freshwaters.

Construction contracts

Bank erosion control

Bank reclaimation and environmental restoration, reclaiming land that has been lost to a water with environmentally considerate materials, improving habitats and providing shelter for invertebrates, as well as regenerating lost native flora species with new planting and seeding:

  • Woven Hazel revetments (hazel rods woven between hardwood Chesnut posts)
  • Hazel flow deflectors
  • Solid green oak revetments
  • Gabion stone cages
  • Gabion stone Rock-rolls

Construction to enhance the natural environment and its biodiversity

  • Juvenile Fish refuges
  • Cormorant proof fish refuges
  • Spawning refuges
  • Invertebrate refuges
  • Coir rolls
  • Coir mats
  • Native Planting Schemes (we do not supply non-native species)
  • Nature reserve enclosures
  • Floating reed beds
  • Landscaping of new ponds and lakes, natural or lined
  • Rockeries, waterfalls, fountains

Access and boundaries

Invasive species control

Involves the removal of undesirable or invasive non-native aquatic species, allowing the recovery of the native species that were originally outcompeted. These non desirable species often choke our waters if left unmanaged. We also undertake the treatment of non-native terrestrial macrophytes that grow near and around water courses, using spraying and stem injection techniques that are not toxic to aquatic organisms and ecosystems

Control of:

  • Parrots feather
  • Mares tail
  • Blanket-weed
  • Non-native lilies
  • Encroaching reed swamps e.g. bulrush swamp
  • Japanese knotweed
  • Balsam
  • Floating pennywort
